1.
Mumford and Sons – Sigh No More: If you don't already know how I feel about this band, then you must be a stranger to me and this blog. Get learned. If you don't have this album, you must.
2.
She and Him – Volume Two: Zooey Deschanel is the indie princess of today; M. Ward is an anti-folk rocker. Together, they make a very pleasing, retro pop album. Volume One was great, and this one shows Zooey's maturity as a songwriter.
3.
Coldplay – Viva La Vida: Coldplay is good. Don't be a super-fan and tell me they're the best band in the world, but don't be a super-hipster and tell me they're too mainstream to listen to.
4.
Radiohead – Kid A: There seems to be a different Radiohead album on sale for $5 on Amazon MP3 every month, but I'm not complaining. This is just one of many great albums by Thom Yorke and Co.
5.
Ben Folds – Way to Normal: Ben Folds. Piano rock master. This isn't his best, in my opinion, but it's far from his worst and definitely not bad.
6.
Midlake – The Courage of Others: Midlake is just a solid band, and this is their first release in a few years. The songs will mellow you out rather than pump you up, and you'll love them for it.
7.
Mogwai – : This is speculative, putting this on this list, because I myself don't have this album. But I have listened to Mogwai enough to know that they are some of the best post-rock out there, and a live album of theirs is bound to be something special.
8.
Gram Parsons – GP: This guy liked drugs and UFO's and making great music. Emmylou Harris also sang with him a lot before he roamed into the desert and died of a drug overdose. Cool right?
9.
Johnny Flynn – Been Listening: For a while now, I have been on a hearty music diet that largely consists of British folk, and this man is one of the greats. Plus, Laura Marling is on one of the tracks.
10.
Katie Herzig – Apple Tree: I'm from Nashville, and I like a lot of Nashville artists. Katie Herzig is one of my favorites, and this album is a fantastic collection of fantastic songs.
11.
Leeland – Sound of Melodies: This is the first of the band's three full-length albums, and it's the only one I've listened to much. It's good pop rock, written by the singer who was 18 at the time.
BONUS CHRISTMAS SECTION
Two Christmas albums I can't resist including:
12.
John Denver and The Muppets – A Christmas Together: Do I really need to say anything?
13.
Sara Groves – O Holy Night: Great songwriter. I am about to buy this album myself.
Go ye thereforth and listen!
